Turf Tyres – Gentle on Grass, Great for Mowing

If your tractor spends most of its time on lawns, paddocks, or maintained ground, there’s a good chance turf tyres are the right fit.

Designed with a wide, shallow tread, turf tyres are all about protecting the surface beneath you — whether that’s a paddock you’ve just topped, a garden lawn, or a smart-looking arena.

What Are Turf Tyres?

Turf tyres have a flatter, less aggressive tread than agricultural or industrial tyres. Their tread pattern typically features closely spaced, low-profile blocks, offering a large contact area with minimal ground disturbance.

They’re specifically designed for surface protection over raw pulling power.

Where Turf Tyres Shine

✔️ Grass protection: The wide footprint spreads the tractor’s weight, preventing ruts, divots, or turf tearing — especially important on regularly used lawns or paddocks.

✔️ Smoother ride: Their tread pattern gives a quieter, more comfortable drive on hard or level surfaces like compacted soil, gravel, or driveways.

✔️ Light mowing and towing: Perfect for topping grass, moving muck trailers, or towing a small harrow without leaving a mess behind.

✔️ Low ground pressure: Ideal if you want to avoid compacting softer ground — especially useful around livestock or horse paddocks.

When They Might Not Be Enough

Limited mud grip: In wet fields or tilled soil, the shallow tread can fill quickly and lose traction.

Not for heavy pulling: Turf tyres aren’t built for high-drag implements like ploughs or subsoilers — you’ll find them slipping and struggling.

Inclines and soft edges: On slopes or soft verges, they may slide rather than dig in, particularly in wet weather.

Typical Jobs Suited to turf tyres

  • Mowing large lawns or paddocks

  • Topping horse fields

  • Light trailer towing on firm ground

  • Yard sweeping or muck trailer duties

  • Arena harrowing or maintenance

If your main concern is leaving the ground tidy, especially where people or animals use the space regularly, turf tyres are an excellent choice.

Need to Work in Winter?

R3 tyres can still work in light snow or frost, especially with 4WD or added weight. But in heavy winter mud, they’re likely to spin out.

If you’re only doing occasional winter work, tyre chains can give added grip without switching tyre types — just go easy on tight turns.

Good to Know

  • Available in a range of widths: Wider turf tyres increase flotation and reduce pressure on softer soils.

  • Chains are an option: If you want to boost winter performance, turf tyres are well-suited to chain fitting.

  • Ideal for estates and equestrian yards: Where appearance and low disturbance matter, they’re hard to beat.

Coming next:We’ll look at Industrial Tyres — the tough, do-it-all tread that’s become a favourite for mixed-use jobs.
