You’ve seen the options: deep-lug ags for maximum traction, wide-footprint turfs for lawn/pitch care, and tough industrials for mixed jobs. But how do you decide which tyre is actually right for your land, your jobs, and your setup?
In this final post of our compact tractor tyre series, we’re answering the most common questions and offering some simple, honest advice to help you choose with confidence.
Can I change tyre types later on?
Yes — in most cases, you can switch to a different tyre type after purchase. Many owners even keep two sets: turf tyres for summer and a more aggressive set for winter or fieldwork.
That said, switching often means buying new wheels as well. R1s are narrower, while R4s and wider turf tyres may need different rims. Make sure any change keeps your rolling radius matched front to back (especially important on 4WD models).
If in doubt, ask — we’re happy to double-check compatibility for you.
Will turf tyres still work in winter?
They can — but it depends on your terrain.
On firm ground, light frost or a bit of snow, turf tyres are fine. Some users even fit chains in the worst of the weather for extra bite. But if you’re working in deep mud, wet fields or heavy clay, turf treads will likely clog and start to slip.
If you need reliable grip year-round, especially in rough or wet conditions, R4s or R1s may be a better fit.
What’s the most versatile tyre for mixed use?
If you do a bit of everything — loader work, mowing, fencing, moving gravel, towing trailers — R4 industrial tyres are the safest all-round bet.
They strike a strong balance between traction and surface protection, with a tough build that handles hard-standing and soft soil alike. It’s no wonder they’ve become a favourite for smallholdings and contractors alike, but do watch out in the soft.
How do I choose if I’m still not sure?
Simple: base your decision on what you do most often, not the odd job once a year.
If you spend most of your time mowing or maintaining turf, go R3
If you’re regularly working soil or pulling heavy implements, go R1
If your days are mixed, and you want one tyre to cover the lot, go R4
